Testimonials

There is a handful of people in the country who have the passion for Memory Impaired and they are few and far in between. Doug is Leading that pack. Doug is a superb Architect and has a passion, interest, and knowledge. By now, he’s had so many years of experience with different designs, buildings, places, programs that he brings together a wealth of knowledge that is exceptional.

The Building itself is enabling the resident to have freedom of choice in their life, and to experience life. This sounds easy, but it is not easy to produce. If you’re going to design a building to serve the memory impaired, I don’t think you can do any better than tapping Douglas Pancake Architects.

-Loren Shook, President & CEO Silverado Senior Living

I don’t want to say it’s easy, but - it’s easy! The Building really sells itself. People walk in and they notice a difference. There’s a feeling when you walk into this building of ‘Home’. I felt it when I first walked in.

-Jennifer Vazquez, Executive Director, Paintbrush Senior Living

Douglas Pancake Architects did a fantastic job as the Architect of Record on our Ridgeview Health Center. Ridgeview includes three different levels of care – Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing, and is part of The Glen at Scripps Ranch CCRC Campus. The building turned out beautifully! Inside and out. DPA’s familiarity with all three levels of care led to a thoughtful and efficient design. In addition, DPA’s substantial OSHPD experience, and familiarity with the OSHPD process and key personnel really helped with the difficult permitting and construction administration processes.

Congratulations for delivering the beautiful new Grove building at the Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens! I truly appreciate the efforts that everyone contributed to keep the project on track and for the high-quality memory support neighborhood that ABHOW will be delivering to our residents and, in fact, to the entire city. The Quiring team did an awesome job at bringing the project in months early. That was quite an accomplishment! DPA, you have done a great job in providing high quality design that members of the ABHOW team are already speaking of with great pride. Thanks again! I appreciate your continued efforts and look forward to the delivery of the Commons Building which I think will absolutely astound the community and all of ABHOW!

I had the pleasure of working with Doug Pancake to resolve the fire clearance crisis that mislabeled many California Assisted Living residents as "bedridden" and put seniors at risk of unnecessary eviction. Doug provided vital architectural and building code expertise, which coupled with his unassuming yet persistent communication style, enabled us to reach consensus with the OSFM and local fire marshals on rational building standards for Assisted Living residents. I highly value Doug's expertise, creativity, and solution-oriented focus, and continue to be impressed by his commitment to senior housing.

I was at the new addition of the Sierra Vista community yesterday afternoon and it looks great! Vida told me the story below and I wanted to her to write it up to share with all of you.

This is just one of many stories to come where you have not just built a building but you have made possible the place where the talented Sierra Vista team can change many hundreds of lives for the better in the years to come.

Thank you for your dedicated work!

We have moved some residents to Terrace Park this week. One of them, Evelyn, made a comment to one of the caregivers as she woke up in her new room last Wednesday. With tears in her eyes she said, 'What did I do to deserve this beautiful place? God must love me so!'

Later in the day, I saw Evelyn's daughter at Terrace Park as she visited with her mother and she told me how thankful she is that her mother is thoroughly enjoying herself at the new neighborhood. And not only that, she has also observed that, her mother is not just happier, but she is more alert, more verabal, and more engaged. Evelyn's daughter was so touched by her mother's comments and the positive change in her mother's demeanor, that she too, had tears in her eyes.

Our staff have observed that indeed, the residents at Terrace Park appear not just happier as evidenced by their many smiles but they also seem more engaged and alert. The brand new neighborhood, along with activities specially addressing the needs of early-stage resident, have definitely made an impact on our residents' lives. Thank you for all you've done to help make this possible. We, at Sierra Vista, look forward to changing more lives as more residents enjoy the beautiful brand new social neighborhood that is Terrace Park, the premier early-stage Dementia neighborhood in San Gabriel Valley. Thank you!

You are doing such good work to improve lives of SNF occupants. Thank you Doug.

-Yumiko Westland, Director of Facilities Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services

My initial conversation with Mr. Pancake was straight and to the point. He identified the issues, advised me what the code was, instructed me as to what he needed to make his further determination, and explained how this was going to go. I found his level of knowledge on this topic (especially in comparison to mine) to be extraordinary and his manner was both concise and confident.

When we met in person at my facility I felt as though I had known Doug my whole life. He put me and my family at ease as he walked me through the code and (literally) the building. Following our meeting he penned a letter to the local Fire Department that resolved the matter positively from all sides, and thanks to the letter and a very efficient Fire Department, the matter was resolved in only two business days.

It is without reservation that I recommend Mr. Pancake in any kind of similar situation. Clearly my building had the right elements to satisfy the authorities, but should any other issue ever come up, my first call would be to Mr. Pancake.

-David Slomovic, CEO Sunnycrest Senior Living

I have had the great fortune of working with Doug Pancake on two projects recently: the repositioning of our four levels of Health Care services and the planning for 58 new independent living apartments at La Vida Llena. Through Doug's years of experience in developing senior housing, he was able to create a plan to meet the needs of our residents and the vision of our Board. Doug is thoroughly knowledgeable in all aspects of health care regulations and was always readily accessible to answer questions from staff, contractors and inspectors.
